Comparison of proposals to replace Line 3

@Joeyconnick, Blaixx, and Johnny Au: I propose the deletion of the excessively complex table in Line 3 Scarborough#Replacement with alternate transit and adding a new paragraph in the section to summarize the issue. The essence of the LRT vs. subway argument was the LRT would be built sooner at a lower cost and be longer with more stops while the subway option would eliminate the transfer at Kennedy. Line 3 derailment

@Joeyconnick and Johnny Au:: Since the Line 3 derailment is a major event that might result in the early closure of the line, I suggest adding the following entry to the article, to be updated later as the cause of the accident and the fate of the line become known:

On July 24, 2023, the last car of a train on Line 3 Scarborough derailed south of Ellesmere station. There were 45 people were on board the train with 5 injuries reported.(CityNews ref) The TTC estimated that the line would stay closed until at least mid-August 2023, or possibly forever given its scheduled closure in November 2023; the cause of the accident was not yet known.(Star ref)

I would go with:
On July 24, 2023, the last car of a train on Line 3 Scarborough derailed south of Ellesmere station. There were 45 people on board, with 5 injuries reported.(CityNews ref) The TTC closed the line while the cause of the accident, which was not immediately apparent, was investigated.(Star ref) The agency indicated that given the planned permanent closure of the line in November 2023, although it expected the closure to last until at least mid-August, it was possible the line might simply not re-open.

Surface connections

@Joeyconnick, Johnny Au, Blaixx, and Username6892: Route 903 Scarborough Express has replaced the Line 3 shuttle buses as of August 26, 2023 as per a TTC article. Since route 903 will not be stopping at Lawrence East station, Ellesmere station, Midland station (Toronto) and McCowan station, I suggest that we delete the "Surface connections" section from each of these 4 articles. I changed the McCowan station article to summarize the number of routes hovering around the station instead of listing the routes. The route list I deleted appeared to be incomplete comparing it to the TTC station page. Does this address your concern about "particularly notable connections"? Rename article to Scarborough RT?

The now defunct line only carried the name "Line 3 Scarborough" for the last 10 years of its operation, while for most of its operation (1985 to 2013) it was known as the Scarborough RT. Since this is now a retrospective article, I suggest changing the article title to reflect the name the line carried for most of its existence. Since the Ontario Line is tentatively given the Line 3 name and colour, it would make sense to rename the article to the original name of Scarborough RT. However, I would wait for others to reply first. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 13:05, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the name has been "Line 3 Scarborough" for long enough that that's how people will refer to it "posthumously". In other Wikipedia articles for example, I think we will write is as "... the former Line 3 Scarborough". In that sense it would be better to not change the title so we don't have to pipe. Ultimately though I think it comes down to WP:COMMONNAME. If the common name reverts back to Scarborough RT, then we should move the article. I don't think that has happened yet. 100% against renaming... multiple sources refer to it as Line 3 and that's also its official name. When (and if... this is transit in Toronto, after all) a new Line 3 emerges, this can become "Line 3 Scarborough (1985)". And honestly it might be appropriate to wait a few years before switching "Ontario Line" to "Line 3" (if Line 3 is finished and they stick with the plan to call it that)—or "Line 3 Scarborough ([start date])" since it will unlikely to be WP:PRIMARY at first—for the reason Blaixx mentions: people might not use the official name immediately upon launch. —Joeyconnick (talk) 16:55, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
